Windows 10 October 2018 Update causes audio issues on specific computers with users reporting “No Audio Output Device Is Installed” error.
There appears to be an easy method to go back to a functional audio system as a Microsoft employee has shared a trick that would help you overcome this situation.
Nov 20, 2018 In the vast majority of cases where you see the ‘no audio output device is installed’ error, re-installing the driver will address the issue. Occasionally when selecting Automatic driver mode in Windows 10, you’ll be presented with several options. My device says there is no audio output installed. The laptop can't play sounds anymore. When I hover my mouse over the speaker icon in the tool bars, it says 'No audio output device is installed.' I've spent so much time researching a solution but I've finally given up. Download from Asus the chipset driver and the audio driver for.
Several users have reported the issue on Reddit and as well as Microsoft answers forum. Similarly, there’s another thread on Reddit that documents a similar issue.
The bug is affecting only a small number of devices as Windows 10 October 2018 Update has been pulled shortly after its launch. It’s also important to note that only a limited number of Windows 10 version 1809 installs are likely affected by the problem as the bug exists on certain Intel systems only.

How to fix No Audio Output Device Is Installed error In Windows 10
#1. Open Command Prompt with admin privileges. To do so, select the Start button, type cmd and right-click Command Prompt from the list and run as administrator.
#2. In Command Prompt, type the following command:
pnputil /enum-drivers
#3. A whole bunch of drivers will be listed and you will see something similar to the below message:
Published Name: oemXXXX.inf
Original Name: intcaudiobus.inf
Provider Name: Intel(R) Corporation
Class Name: System
Class GUID: {4d36e97d-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}
Driver Version: 08/22/2018 09.21.00.3755

Driver Version: 08/22/2018 09.21.00.3755
Signer Name: Microsoft Windows Hardware Compatibility Publisher
#4. You would now need to locate the oemXXXX.inf name that is listed (XXXX could be any number). It’s worth noting that you’re supposed to find the right match otherwise you might remove the wrong driver and end up breaking another functionality of your PC.
#5. Once you have found the driver, run the below command from an admin command prompt:
pnputil /delete-driver oemXXXX.inf /uninstall
![Download Download](/uploads/1/2/6/0/126096778/132762459.png)
In the above case, oemXXXX.inf is what you had found earlier.
#6. This will solve your problem.
Method 2
- Open Device Manager and select System Devices.
- Locate Intel Smart Sound Technology driver (SST).
- Right-click and select Update Driver.
- Choose browse from the computer and select High Definition Audio.
- Click Next.
- Intel Smart Sound Technology (SST) driver will disappear and you should have Audio back.
Addressing No Audio Output Device Is Installed error on HP Windows 10 PCs
HP has acknowledged that there is a problem that may prevent the HP computers from using the audio system. The company has also shared a workaround that advises users to uninstall the wrong driver and restore the audio system. You can follow the third method below.
- Right-click the Start button and select ‘Device Manager’.
- Select System Devices.
- Right-click Intel(R) Smart Sound Technology Audio Controller and select Uninstall device.
- A uninstall pop-up message would appear and you can ignore the warning, and click Uninstall.
- Click action in the top menu and click Scan for hardware changes.
- Repeat this step again (if the option show ups).
- If this issue persists, manually download the driver from the manufacturer’s website after uninstalling the audio driver.
Microsoft offers a fix
Microsoft has acknowledged the audio problems on Windows 10 and the company has revealed that a botched Intel driver update was pushed out yesterday that disabled the audio system on certain PCs.
Microsoft says that the Intel audio driver was incorrectly pushed to devices and the company has already pulled the driver from Windows Update to investigate the reports.
It turns out that the bug also affects Windows 10 version 1803 or above and to fix the audio issues on your PC, you can follow the steps outlined by Microsoft.
- Open Device Manager and Sound, video, and game controllers section.
- Look for Realtek device or any other audio device that has an exclamation point indicating problems.
- Click on the device and choose Devices by connection from the view menu.
- Look for a parent driver called “Intel SST Audio Controller” (Intel Smart Sound Technology driver version 09.21.00.3755).
- Right-click the controller device, choose Properties, click on driver tab and uninstall.
Intel responds
Intel’s support team has confirmed that the users might experience audio issues after installing KB4464330 for Windows 10 or Windows 10 October 2018 Update. Intel says that they have already identified the problem and Windows 10 October 2018 Update rollout has been paused on incompatible Intel PCs.
A fix for these issues is already included in latest Intel update and you can download Intel Graphics Driver version 25.20.100.6326 which comes with Intel Display Audio Driver version 10.25.0.10 or newer.
You’re still recommended to install the latest version of Intel Graphics and Audio Driver which is compatible with October 2018 Update. For the time being, applying the above workaround seems to be the best bet.

Usually, you can get back to pumping those jams in a matter of minutes.

Fix the ‘no audio output device is installed’ error in Windows 10
First let’s see if Windows Audio services are running and then what Windows has in terms of output devices and drivers.
- Right click on an empty section of the Taskbar and select Task Manager.
- Select the Services tab and the ‘Open Services’ text link at the bottom.
- Look for ‘Windows Audio’ and ‘Windows Audio Endpoint Builder’ services. Make sure they are running and set to automatic.
- Also check for the service related to your audio device and make sure that is running too. The name will differ depending on your hardware.
If all services are running, move on to the next step.
- Right click on the Windows Start Button and select Control Panel.
- Select Hardware and Sound and Device Manager.
- Click ‘Sound, video and game controllers’.
- Look at what is there and ensure your audio device is listed.
- Right click the audio device in question (it may have a yellow triangle next to it, it may not) and select ‘Update Driver Software’.
- Select Automatic and let Windows find the driver or manual if you would prefer to do it yourself.
- Reboot your system if prompted and retest.
In the vast majority of cases where you see the ‘no audio output device is installed’ error, re-installing the driver will address the issue. Occasionally when selecting Automatic driver mode in Windows 10, you’ll be presented with several options. If the specific driver doesn’t work, repeat the process and find the default ‘High Definition Audio Device’ driver that should be listed. Reboot and retry.
If that doesn’t work, you could try a refresh of Windows 10.
- Perform a system restore or backup any files you cannot afford to lose.
- Navigate to Settings, Update & security, Recovery.
- Select Reset this PC and the ‘keep my files’ option.
- Follow the wizard to reset Windows while keeping your personal files.
- Then reboot and retest.
A system refresh is the step of last resort but has been known to restore audio to fully working status. Even though the correct drivers may be present, the correct hardware selected, services running and everything appearing as it should be, there is occasionally a disconnect between the driver and Windows core. The refresh links the two together again restoring sound to your device.
If that still doesn’t work, it’s possible you’re experiencing a hardware failure. Though it’s rare for a sound card to die, it can happen to any component in your system. If you have a desktop PC with a free PCI or PCIe slot, the best bet may be to just buy another sound card. They’re very cheap, and would certainly be less cost and trouble than hauling your machine to the repair shop.

If you do have a laptop, there are other workarounds still. If your laptop is Bluetooth enabled, and most laptops these days are, you should consider investing in a pair of Bluetooth headphones. If you need to connect your laptop to a stereo system, there are Bluetooth adaptors that will allow you to do so. Many smartphones these days make do without the minijack—you can make your laptop work without one too.
